Southampton-based developer Kinetic Games has rolled out a major update to Phasmophobia, unveiling a comprehensive rework of one of the horror title’s most recognisable locations as the studio prepares for its long-anticipated 1.0 launch.

The refreshed version of 6 Tanglewood Drive — one of the original maps introduced when the game entered Early Access in 2020 — is now available as a free update across all platforms. The reimagined map aims to modernise visuals, deepen narrative elements and introduce new interactive features, while preserving the layout that has become familiar to millions of players.

Originally conceived as a beginner-friendly investigation site, Tanglewood is a single-storey suburban property with a basement, multiple rooms and numerous “ghost looping” spots that have become embedded in the game’s competitive meta. Its accessibility made it one of the most-played maps in Phasmophobia’s early development, helping to establish the title’s reputation during its breakout success on PC.

The update forms part of a broader effort by Kinetic Games to standardise visuals across the title and elevate production values as the co-operative horror experience edges closer to a full commercial release. The studio says the rework enhances replayability without altering the core structure that veteran players know intimately.

Among the changes are additional environmental details, updated textures, more dynamic paranormal interactions and new audio cues designed to intensify immersion. Small additions — including unexpected sound effects such as a tumble dryer beep — are intended to unsettle returning players who have memorised the map’s rhythms.

The overhaul also introduces expanded environmental storytelling, with subtle clues embedded throughout the house to hint at events that predate the haunting. The approach reflects a shift towards deeper narrative integration within the gameplay framework.

“Our community knows this map inside out, so we wanted to approach the rework very carefully,” said Corey Dixon, Art Director at Kinetic Games. “Ultimately, the update is to implement improvements to game visuals and gameplay, while deepening the eerie atmosphere and narrative. It’s the same Tanglewood we know and love, but with better, spookier elements. Players might even find some clues about what happened in the house before the haunting…”

The studio has also teased a new interactive element located in the basement. So far, only an image of a locomotive train has been released, prompting speculation among players about how it will factor into investigations. Further details are expected to emerge organically as users explore the revised map.

The Tanglewood rework signals a continuation of Kinetic Games’ strategy of incremental but high-impact updates during the Early Access phase. Since its launch, Phasmophobia has evolved significantly, expanding onto PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2 and Xbox Series X|S in addition to its established PC presence via Steam.

Priced at £16.75 in the UK, the title has maintained strong engagement by combining procedural ghost behaviour with cooperative multiplayer mechanics. The decision to provide the Tanglewood update free of charge aligns with the studio’s approach to rewarding its existing player base while sustaining momentum ahead of version 1.0.

Looking ahead, Kinetic Games confirmed that development focus will now turn to a player character overhaul and a rework of another early-game location, 13 Willow Street. Both projects form part of the 2026 roadmap, which outlines the final stages of refinement before full release.

The steady cadence of updates underscores the studio’s ambition to strengthen Phasmophobia’s long-term position in the competitive horror and live-service gaming market. By revisiting legacy content rather than simply expanding the map roster, Kinetic Games is seeking to preserve continuity while elevating quality standards.

As the title approaches its full commercial launch, the refreshed Tanglewood Drive stands as both a nod to the game’s origins and a signal of its next phase. For long-time players and new recruits alike, the haunted suburban house once again becomes the entry point into one of Britain’s most successful independent horror franchises.
