Porto’s new director of professional football, Jorge Costa, was suspended on Tuesday for 15 days by the Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), for incidents that occurred while he was still coach of AVS.

The Federal Disciplinary Body justified the sanction, in addition to a fine of 1,340 euros, by the “insult to the honour and reputation and defamatory report” of the then coach Aveiro in the home defeat against Tondela (1-0) in the thirty-fourth and final round of the 2023/24 edition of the Second Division, which preceded reaching the play-off for promotion to the main division.

AVS would go on to beat then-First Division side Portimonense (4-2 on aggregate) and achieve an unprecedented promotion to the I Liga on June 2, before Jorge Costa ended his career as head coach to return to FC Porto as director of football.

The “insult to honour and reputation and defamatory accusations” also prompted the French Football Federation to punish Luis Gonçalves, the former director of the “Blue and White” club and the club’s general manager, with a 60-day ban and a fine of 8,160 euros. It also exempts him from “assaults”.

There were scuffles with members of the Sporting management in the stands at the Estádio do Dragão, at the end of the draw between FC Porto and “Luis” (2-2), in the 31st round of the first league.

Vitória de Guimarães were fined €7,140 for “failure to observe other duties” in the triumphant reception of Boavista (1-0), on the same day of the 2023/24 edition of the main division, while the “chess players” had to pay €1,428 for “incorrect public behaviour” and “serious attacks” in a sports venue.

FPF also punished Länk Vilaverdense, recently relegated to the 3rd league, from 17th to 18th and last place in the 2nd league in 2023/24, exchanging with Belenenses, also “condemned”, and went on to collect 24 points.

Minho’s logo had already been penalised, for the same reason, by deducting a point, in one of the salary controls of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP).
