Microsoft has published detailed instructions on turning off or even uninstalling the OneDrive cloud storage app that comes bundled with Windows. This change at Microsoft is likely due to the need to implement the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
New instructions to stop using OneDrive have been spotted Newen website. They explain step by step how to stop or uninstall the service. However, Microsoft recommends disconnecting the user account from OneDrive because it is easier than removing it completely.
After you disconnect your OneDrive account on Windows or macOS, users retain access to their files if they use the website via a URL OneDrive.live.com. In addition to turning it off, users can hide the program or remove it completely. These options are available in some versions of Windows and on Android and iOS mobile devices.
However, the guide published by Microsoft contains some inconsistencies, as it initially suggests that OneDrive is directly integrated into Windows 10 and 11 and cannot be removed, only hidden. Moreover, it says that OneDrive can be removed from the operating system without the risk of losing data already in the service.
Removing OneDrive from the operating system involves going to Windows Settings, then the Apps page, clicking on Installed Apps, searching for OneDrive and selecting the Uninstall option. This option exists in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not in Windows 8.1.
