The series is set in the Bakumatsu period (1853-1867), at the end of the Edo era, in a fictional version of Kyoto. The protagonist, Ryoma Sakamoto (he did exist, but is clearly a retelling), joins the Shinsengumi police force. In the real world, Sakamoto was instrumental in ending the Tokugawa shogunate.
