The leader of the far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) party has defended Germany's exit from the European Union (EU) and will call for a referendum if he comes to power.
Alice Weidel, speaking to the Financial Times newspaper, says that there will be a popular consultation on the country's permanency in the EU, similar to what happened in the United Kingdom with Brexit.
Alice Weidel believes Germany should follow the path of the United Kingdom and leave the EU.
“Dexit” – Germany's exit from the European Union – is the “right” decision and will help strengthen the country's self-determination.
The AfD leader's statements come after a weekend of demonstrations against the far-right party that brought together thousands of people in several German cities.
The protests come after revelations of a secret meeting between AfD officials, neo-Nazis and businessmen. A plan for mass deportation of immigrants and foreigners with German passports was under discussion.
Alice Weidel speaks of a “slanderous” press trial and considers it unrepresentative of the party's views. He says the Afd only wants to use the laws and deport people in Germany irregularly.
