Data collection

The process of collecting data from social networks like Facebook generates network revenue by creating user profiles and matching advertisers who target specific ads to people based on their past interests.

However, the social network has a usage policy where it is not allowed or requested to collect data for Facebook. But the case under analysis is that even after denying this permission, the company continues to collect this data and sell it to advertisers on the platform.

What does Tanya O’Carroll say?

In an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, O’Carroll said: “The case is really that we can all connect to social media on our own terms and there’s no need to fundamentally accept that we should be subjected to surveillance profiling. Very invasive surveillance of access to social media.

Together with UK legal campaign group Foxglove, O’Carroll alleges that Facebook has breached Article 21 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If the process succeeds, the activist says it could set a precedent for millions of Facebook users to file lawsuits against the company. O’Carroll has filed a complaint in the Superior Court and is awaiting approval of Meta’s claim.
