Just two days after the European elections, Marta Temido, Sebastião Bogalho and João Cotrim de Figueiredo travel to Brussels. The three are new faces, and have no previous experience in the European Parliament. The opening will only take place on July 16 in Strasbourg, but they are already heading towards the first contact with the establishment.
Cotrim de Figueiredo is supposed to be the first to arrive, and from what Expresso has learned, his schedule is full. The leader of the Liberal Initiative list and second place on the list, Ana Martins, will sit on the Liberal bench of the Renew Europe Party.
Marta Temido met with the current leader of the Socialists and Democrats seat, Spaniard Iratx García. AD List head Sebastião Bugalho is also expected to spend part of Tuesday at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels.
Sunday’s elections meant a complete renewal of Portuguese MEPs. Of the 21 current members, only Lidia Pereira was re-elected. Many analysts warn of a loss of influence for the country and an increased challenge facing the new MEPs.
The new midterm session of 720 members of the European Parliament takes office in the week of 16-19 July. Until then, there is a lot of negotiation so that those elected or re-elected can get the places they want in the various parliamentary committees and compete for positions of responsibility and influence, such as coordination or vice-presidents of groups and the European Parliament.
