If you frequently scratch your ear, you should be aware. Persistent itching can indicate the presence of other problems, such as allergies, foreign bodies in the ear, and even infections.

“Itching of the ear is a very frequent complaint. It can have several causes and should never be overlooked, because even if there is no disease in itself, it is just a habit of this patient, and if it is frequent, it can cause otitis due to itchy shock.” says ENT specialist Raquel Ferraz, of Santa Luzia Hospital, which integrates the Vision One network.

The most common underlying condition for ear itching is earwax buildup, infection, or allergy in the area. In the first case, excess wax can cause irritation in the area. It is important not to attempt to use a cotton swab to remove the material, as it can be pushed further into the ear canal. The ideal is to consult a doctor or hygienist for safe wax removal.

Itching can also indicate an ear infection, such as otitis externa. In addition to itching, an ear infection causes pain and inflammation in the area. In cases of allergies, symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose may also appear along with the irritating itching.

“An ear that doesn’t produce a lot of wax is the ear that usually itches. So, excessive cleaning with a cotton swab, for example, may indeed be a cause. Allergies and eczema are other possible causes. Fungal otitis, also known as otomycosis, Which is very common in those who use headphones, is also part of the differential diagnosis, ”narrates otolaryngologist Raquel Ferraz.

“And less common, but also unforgettable, is reflux, which can also cause itching in the ear and throat,” adds the specialist from Santa Luzia Hospital.

Whatever the cause, it is important that the patient investigate with the help of an expert. It is recommended to avoid using any liquid or object inside the ear. Cleaning the outer area of the ear, gently and with the help of a washcloth, can help. If the itching is due to an allergy, it is possible to use anti-allergic medications, but the key is to see a doctor to find out the cause of the problem and the best treatment. “Any excessive itching must be accompanied by a specialist. Even if pathological causes are excluded, it must be fought, because it tends to cause otitis due to trauma “, concludes ENT specialist Raquel Ferraz.
