Doutor Finances, a company specializing in personal and family finances, has launched the IMI Simulator 2024, a tool that will help calculate this tax.

Understanding how much IMI you will pay is essential to ensuring a balanced family budget. The tax value is linked to several factors such as the value of tax assets (VPT), the economic situation of the family, and the type and location of the property.

Municipal councils have the power to determine the tax rate to be applied to their residents, within the range set by the government. Therefore, rates can range between 0.3% and 0.45% of VPT for urban buildings. This rate may exceptionally rise to 0.5%. This year, 48 local authorities reduced the IMI and the overwhelming majority decided to give the family discount (which increased this year).

To find out the rate in the municipality in which you live, you can use the site in a simple and easy way IMI Simulator for Dr. FinanceWhich shows the total amount to be paid and the different ways to divide the payment. Whether you can split the bill into installments depends on the total amount each person will have to pay.

Regarding the family discount applied to families, the value varies according to the number of children, with a minimum of 30 euros and a maximum of 140 euros. However, it is the different local authorities that decide whether to apply this discount or not. This year, out of 308 municipal councils, 245 have decided to offer this family discount, although some of them only offer this discount to families with three or more children.

In 2024, there is also an additional penalty for all owners of unused properties, i.e. vacant or abandoned buildings. Specifically in these cases, local authorities can apply a higher IMI rate, a measure that strengthens the commitment of the Mais Habitação programme. In properties located in urban compact areas, the tax due can be increased by 10 times and penalized by 20% every year.
