Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, also known as the “Devil's Comet”, will be visible with the naked eye, according to experts' predictions. On April 21, 2024, the object will reach the point of maximum approach to the Sun, which will increase its apparent brightness.

Those who follow the astronomical news of 2023 may remember the comet, whose shape resembles the spaceship Millennium Falcon, from the series star Wars. This is 12P/Pons – Brooks, a frozen object that eventually explodes and displays several “spikes” on its comet tail.

This phenomenon occurs because this is a cold volcanic comet, meaning it contains a cold volcano, with a solid core of ice, dust and gas. When solar radiation heats the core, the ice evaporates, increasing internal pressure and causing an eruption.

Upon explosion, the cryovolcanic gases form a tail different from that seen in “normal” comets. In the case of Pons Brooks, the shape of the spikes reminds some of Han Solo's spaceship, though others prefer to compare the silhouette to horns — hence the nickname “Devil's Comet.”

Well, Comet Satan is heading toward the sun, and in April, it will reach perihelion (the point of maximum proximity to the sun that the celestial body's orbit allows). This will increase their apparent brightness and make them visible to the naked eye.

However, comets are inherently unpredictable objects: the closer they are to the Sun, the more likely they are to split into several pieces. If this happens, its glow will become more widespread and we will hardly be able to see it. The good news is that Pons Brooks has already made this trip before and survived for another “orbit” around our star.

Pons-Brooks' perihelion is scheduled to reach April 21, when it will also be relatively close to Earth. But rest assured, the object poses no danger to our planet.
