CNA discusses the implications of EU and UK due diligence for Brazilian agriculture

– Brazil’s Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) held a live broadcast on Tuesday (30) entitled “Due Diligence of the European Union and the United Kingdom: Implications for International Trade of Brazilian Agriculture”.

The discussion was attended by Matheus de Andrade, Technical Adviser of CNA’s Directorate of International Relations, and Fernando Zellner, Assistant Secretary of Commerce and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. “The way these laws are structured is very worrying economically and socially and they do not take into account the pillars of sustainability. We may have a decrease in agricultural production and trade, flow diversion and increase in food insecurity. There are many negative points that they see in this law”, he said.

Debaters argue the law is still being developed and provides increased requirements regarding compliance with environmental law as a criterion for commercialization. “It is necessary to prove that they come from areas without deforestation, but for now without clear criteria,” says Andrade.

The secretary of Mapa also demonstrated the concern of the Brazilian government regarding the construction of legislation that takes into account environmental issues in an unbalanced way with social and economic issues.

“We are not against initiatives, but we question the form and alternative policy chosen by the European Union and the United Kingdom to address the issue of deforestation, without properly taking into account the pillars of sustainability. There is also the downgrading of the national law of producing countries, rejecting the fact that Brazil has one of the most advanced laws in the world, the Brazilian Forest Code. .
