Community landmark joins nationwide initiative celebrating 150 years of bilateral ties

New “Avenue of Blossom” expected to enhance visitor experience and cultural connection

Cedars Park has strengthened its role as a community and cultural landmark with the planting of 18 Sakura cherry trees, part of a nationwide initiative commemorating 150 years of friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom.

The trees were gifted through the Sakura Cherry Tree Project, a programme designed to symbolise goodwill and long-standing diplomatic ties between the two nations. Their arrival at Cedars Park places the site among a growing number of public spaces across the UK participating in the initiative.

The Sakura Cherry Tree Project was launched following a joint communiqué between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Theresa May during their meeting in Japan in 2017. As cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan’s national flower and a cherished symbol of renewal and goodwill, the project aims to create a lasting, living tribute to the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Since its inception in 2019, the project has seen significant rollout across the country, with more than 7,700 cherry trees planted in parks, schools and public spaces. The inclusion of Cedars Park reflects both the scale of the initiative and its emphasis on community engagement.

At Cedars Park, the newly planted trees have been arranged to form what is described as an “Avenue of Blossom” along the rear footpath. The design is intended to provide a seasonal focal point for visitors, with the trees expected to deliver a notable visual display each spring as they mature.

Cedars Park is honoured to be among the participating locations, with the newly planted trees forming a beautiful Avenue of Blossom along the rear footpath. As the trees mature, they will create a striking seasonal display for visitors to enjoy each spring.

The initiative forms part of the broader Japan–UK Seasons of Culture (2019–2020), a programme aimed at deepening mutual understanding through cultural exchange. The Sakura Cherry Tree Project is supported by organisations in both countries, underlining its diplomatic as well as environmental and social significance.

In Japan, leadership of the initiative sits with the Japan-British Society. In the UK, coordination is handled by a dedicated committee convened by the Japan Matsuri Company. This group works in partnership with several organisations, including the Japanese Association, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK, the Japan Society, and the Nippon Club.

The collaborative structure reflects a cross-sector approach, bringing together cultural institutions, business groups and community organisations. This alignment has been key to the project’s reach and continued expansion across the UK.

Beyond its symbolic value, the planting at Cedars Park is expected to contribute to local environmental and community outcomes. Public green spaces continue to play an increasingly important role in urban and regional planning, offering both ecological benefits and opportunities for public engagement.

The planting at Cedars Park reflects the shared values of friendship, cultural exchange, and community enrichment. The trees will stand as a long-term symbol of international cooperation and a gift for future generations.

As the trees establish themselves over the coming years, local stakeholders anticipate that the site will become a seasonal attraction, drawing visitors during the spring blossom period and reinforcing the park’s role as a destination within the community.

The Cedars Park installation is one of many examples of how international partnerships are being translated into tangible local assets. While rooted in diplomacy, the project’s outcomes are distinctly community-focused, offering both immediate and long-term benefits to residents and visitors alike.
