Apple will release a security update for the iPhone to keep thieves away from your device.

This new functionality acts as an extra layer of protection for the vast amount of personal data stored on iPhones, and aims to keep criminals away by adding extra steps to access the information.

Today, iPhone users can view highly sensitive information and make important changes to their phone settings using just a passcode — a four- or six-digit sequence of numbers typically used to perform a wide range of actions, from unlocking the device to viewing credit card information and seeing all your passwords. Instead of relying on the traditional sequence of numbers, users with the new functionality will now be required to enter biometric data using Face ID (face reading) or Touch ID (fingerprint) to access the data or make changes.

For more sensitive actions – changing your Apple ID password, adding or removing face or fingerprint scanning, turning off Find My iPhone, or turning off protection against stolen devices – users will be prompted for biometric data and will have to wait one hour before resetting. “As threats to users’ devices increase, we are working tirelessly to develop powerful new protections for our users and their data,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to CNN. “In the rare case that a thief sees you entering your passcode and then steals your device, Stolen Device Protection adds a sophisticated new layer of protection.”

Additional security measures only apply when the user is away from a familiar location, such as work or home. These locations are automatically recognized and stored by the device.

Although it is currently only available to beta users, the feature will be available to all iPhone users in the next software update.
