On the side of the road, a family found what they thought was a wandering dog, he says Watchman. However, the identification of the species was not correct and it was not a pet.
When experts were consulted, they quickly concluded that the calf was a wolf, according to the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable, which shared the story on social media.
The center said the young wolf was apparently separated from his family at too young an age to survive on his own, so he was “walking around and agonizing by the side of a busy road.”
“Then a local family mistakenly took him home after misidentifying him as a stray dog,” he said. “Aware of his confusion, they called us for help.”
“With the assistance of the Ministry of Public Health, we were able to determine that there was no potential risk of exposure to rabies and were able to release him into care, and grant rehabilitation clearance by Mass Wildlife,” the center added.
Since then, the wolf pup has been recovering in the center’s isolation ward, where he will receive an adopted brother from Rhode Island, who will soon be introduced.
“They will be raised together and given the opportunity to grow and learn normal behaviours,” the center said.
