Recently, there has been an increasing trend in Covid-19 cases and in this context our radio contacted the Regional Health Delegate of Alentejo, in order to understand what is happening. Mario Jorge explained, from the beginning, that “coronaviruses, as with Covid-19, have a great capacity to mutate” and that we are facing “a foreseeable reality that will evolve in this direction in the next two or three years”. That is, to the emergence of mutations of this virus”. He stressed that there is absolutely no reason “to worry, but we must maintain vigilance”.

“People, in general, who are healthy, have no reason to worry about respiratory infections that, in the vast majority of cases, they overcome without problems.” The Alentejo regional health delegate stressed that any complications that exist could affect “the oldest and most vulnerable”. In this context, Mario Jorge advised “monitoring” as well as “vaccination, especially from September onwards, to help prevent winter, a time when the influenza virus also circulates”.

He added: “The vaccines that have been given do not contain a common mutation of Covid-19, but they protect against severe cases. However, the elderly, the most vulnerable and those with low immunity should choose vaccination.”

“For patients at risk, especially those with obesity and chronic diseases,” Mario Jorge advises “protecting themselves by using masks in crowded places or by carrying a mask with them, in case they need it in these situations.”

“Those who have symptoms such as fever, body aches and other symptoms associated with Covid, even if they are healthy, should avoid the workplace, wear a mask and wash their hands frequently,” the regional health delegate of Alentejo recommended.
