Millionaire Roman Abramovich appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) to overturn the applied sanctions. He also requested compensation of one million euros for damage to his reputation, but the court did not agree to it.

Abramovich, who holds Russian, Israeli and Portuguese citizenship, is the target of Western sanctions against Russia, which include freezing funds and banning entry into or transit through the European Union.

The millionaire is, in particular, the main shareholder of the parent company Evraz, one of the main Russian groups in the steel and mining sector. This sector provides an important source of income for the Russian government, as described by the European Court of Justice in 2013 statement.

“The General Court rejects the appeal filed by R. A. Abramovich and thus confirms the restrictive measures taken against him. In fact, the Council did not err in its assessment when it decided to include the name of R. A. Abramovich in the relevant lists and then retain it, taking into account his role in Efraz Group, especially the role of its parent company, reveals.

Furthermore, since Abramovich “could not prove that registering his name and keeping it on the lists was illegal, his claim for compensation was also rejected.”

The General Court further confirms that the inclusion of R. a. Abramovich’s listing and retention does not constitute an unjustified and disproportionate restriction of his fundamental rights, which include, in particular, the right to respect for private and family life, freedom of action and freedom of action.
