Police, Fire and Ambulance crews were called to the carriageway, close to Junction 6 near Welwyn, shortly before 8 o'clock this morning.
The road was closed while the collision was dealt with.
Herts Fire and Rescue Service Tweeted this update just before 8am: "Welwyn Garden City appliances attended A1M Junc 5 6 to a multiple vehicle RTC. One trapped casualty was removed using Lukas and delivered to the care of @EastEnglandAmb"
A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "Two ambulances, an ambulance officer and East Anglian Air Ambulance are at the scene".
Kerry messaged BOB fm: "It’s really bad 5 fire engines 3 ambulances, police, air ambulance. So awful".
