Campus West is Welwyn Garden City’s premiere venue, boasting the recently refurbished Hawthorne Theatre, conference facilities, two galleries, a coffee shop and the popular RollerCity skating rink – much loved by families near and far!
Situated just 5 minutes from the station, with plentiful parking adjacent it’s a one-stop entertainment shop.
The Theatre is known for its independent cinema programme, screening a host of wonderful films, both blockbusters and lesser-known art house films from around the world. Our projectionists would be cross if we didn’t let you know that it is one of the very few cinemas which can show academy prints in the correct ratio using special lenses, so archive film of pre-1955 will not be compromised by cropping.
We screen family films, Cuppaboard matinee films and Mini Cine-ma – screening specifically for carers and babies up to 36-months (no one minds if a bit of crying goes on!). With tickets from just £2 for family films and £3.50 for the evening performances it’s a bargain for such a wonderfully civilised surrounding.
Of course, a theatre’s not a theatre unless you have some good live entertainment and we have the lot: drama, comedy, dance, music, kids’ shows – not to mention our fabulous annual Christmas panto - all brought to you by professionals, it’s really worth checking out what’s going on. Why traipse into London when it’s on your doorstep.
If you’re a bit more energetic then RollerCity might be just for you. Tickets for skating are just £5.50, family tickets available, not to mention our amazing summer half price skate sale, public sessions are from Thursday through to Sunday, and there are different sessions to suit ages and ability from Oz for beginners right through to Zone 18 for over-18s with the occasional 'event’ night! Not got your own skates? No problem, you can hire them from us or even buy some from our RollerCity merchandise selection. We also offer skate and film parties to give your kids kudos for unusual party events!
The large, recently transformed, theatre foyer hosts two art galleries - The New Maynard Gallery and the Dame Flora Robson Gallery, both with changing displays. Humphrey's Coffee Shop sells a delicious range of Starbucks’ coffees and teas, tasty sandwiches, toasties, cakes, and much more, alongside a fully-stocked bar.
Also in the foyer is another recent innovation: the Robson Open Mic stage. Fancy yourself a budding performer but never had the nerve? Then get in touch with us and we can book you in. We give you the stage and a 13-amp socket for free – you need to do your own marketing and bring along the audience and step into the limelight! There are also occasional free live music on Thursday evenings. Check the website for details.
Downstairs we have the Hawthorne Studio – a smaller performing space and home to Herts Jazz which brings top jazz performers to the heart of Hertfordshire. Gigs are every Sunday and, since moving in last September, the club has grown from strength to strength. So much so that we are hosting the first ever Herts Jazz Festival from 19 to 21 August, bringing international artists including guitar wizard Martin Taylor and living legend Stan Tracey. With all this plus Toucan 2-4-1 offers, Zebra loyalty cards, and a great big free open day planned for 10 September (free skate and film sessions and a host of exciting events planned) it’s a wonder that we can fit in conference facilities.
So with all this entertainment on hand and just 25 minutes from London and easy to get to by road with plenty of parking what more is there to say? Come on over:
