Concert by Amadeus, the chamber orchestra of St Albans
Saturday, May 18th
Saturday 18th May 2019, 7.30pm
St Saviour's Church, Sandpit Lane, St Albans AL1 4DF
St Albans cellist Michael Wigram returns to play Haydn's D Major cello concerto with Amadeus at St Saviour's Church on 18th May. Michael is no stranger to this church, where he's previously performed concertos by Brahms and Shostakovich. Conducting is Joel Sandelson, who since his first appearance with Amadeus last year has been appointed Assistant Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Joel should also know the Haydn concerto really well – as well as being a conductor, he's a top-flight cellist in his own right!
The concert features two works by composers who were both influenced and taught by Haydn. Mozart's Haffner Symphony (no 35) was written at breakneck speed, with Mozart trying to fulfil various commissions whilst keeping his forthcoming marriage secret from his father.
Beethoven's First Symphony marks the beginning of a new musical era in music, as the young composer lays the foundations for some of the greatest symphonies ever written.
Discounted tickets are available in advance, priced £13, and £3 for accompanied children. They can be purchased from www.ticketsource.co.uk ; admission on the door for adults is £15.
